The Life of Daniel Edward Bloxsom

Daniel Edward Bloxsom was made a Mason in Harmony Lodge No. 6 at Galveston, receiving the Entered Apprentice degree on February 14, 1876, the Fellowcraft on March 27, and the Master Mason degree on May 4 of the same year. He affiliated with Gray Lodge on November 21, 1877.

He worked his way steadily through the officer line: Junior Deacon in 1879–1880, Senior Deacon in 1882–1883, Junior Warden in 1886–1887, and Senior Warden in 1887–1888. He was installed as Master on June 25, 1888, and served through 1889.

Few Brethren have kept the lodge’s accounts as long. He was Treasurer from 1895 to 1907, when he apparently left Houston; the lodge elected him a life member on July 1, 1908, with the note “having left the city.” He returned and served as Treasurer again from 1910 to 1917, and a third time from 1919 to 1928. It was also Bro. Bloxsom whose resolution created life membership in Gray Lodge on August 1, 1900, for Brethren of 25 years’ standing.

He was High Priest of Washington Chapter No. 2, R. A. M., in 1894–1895 and received the Order of High Priesthood on December 5, 1895. He was created a Knight Templar in Ruthven Commandery No. 2 on March 27, 1893, and served as Eminent Commander in 1900. He was also a Past Patron of Ransford Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star.

By trade he was a master car builder for the Southern Pacific lines for many years.

He died on May 10, 1929, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. W. Whealan, and was buried with Masonic honors by Gray Lodge in Hollywood Cemetery. He was survived by a son, Edgar D. Bloxsom, president of the Houston Casket Company; three daughters, Mrs. Whealan, Mrs. C. A. Parnell and Mrs. J. W. Surles; and ten grandchildren.
