The Life of Alexander Franklin Sittig

Alexander Franklin Sittig was born in Chicago, Illinois, on July 31, 1850, and was a printer by trade. He served as secretary of the Houston Post in its early days.

He received his degrees in Gray Lodge No. 329: the Entered Apprentice on September 7, 1882, the Fellowcraft on May 11, 1883, and the Master Mason degree on November 17, 1884. He served as Junior Deacon and Senior Deacon, was elected Junior Warden in 1887, then Senior Warden, and served as Master in 1889–1890. Gray Lodge elected him a life member on February 16, 1910.

He was a member of Washington Chapter No. 2, R. A. M., and was created a Knight Templar in Ruthven Commandery No. 2 on April 19, 1897. In the Scottish Rite he was a charter member and the first Tiler of Houston Chapter of Rose Croix.

His year as Master closed a remarkable stretch in the lodge’s history. From Queyrouze to Bloxsom to Sittig, three Brethren who had served side by side as officers each followed the other into the East, and in 1889 the lodge also saw its first Master, A. S. Richardson, elected Grand Master of Masons in Texas.

Brother Sittig died on February 23, 1932, having been a member of Gray Lodge for nearly half a century.
