Melvin Eulon Prescott

Melvin Eulon Prescott was born at Madisonville, Texas, on November 5, 1922, the son of Marion and May Prescott. After public school he studied mechanical engineering at the University of Houston. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946, in Europe until the end of the war with Germany and then in the Pacific. He married Lois Hamilton, and they had two daughters, Linda May and Rhonda Fay, and a son, Melvin E. Prescott, Jr. A mechanical engineer, he owned and operated his own machine shop, and he enjoyed hunting, fishing and golf.

He received his degrees in Gray Lodge in 1948: the Entered Apprentice on March 8, the Fellowcraft on April 14, and the Master Mason degree on May 26. Elected Junior Warden for 1955–1956, he then served as Senior Warden and was installed as the 86th Master on June 25, 1957, by Past Master Bryan Funderburke, Sr., with Past Master A. C. Finn, Jr., as Marshal. Grand Senior Warden Randall E. Briscoe was the special speaker.

On August 15, 1957, the lodge completed the purchase of its land on Hillcroft Avenue in the Briar Meadow Addition, and the question became how to finance a new building. The high point of the year was the First Annual Reunion and Awards Day on April 25, 1958. A remarkable 554 members attended, and 234 of them received Twenty-Five Year Awards. Deputy Grand Master Briscoe gave an address that drew a standing ovation, and at the request of Grand Master John G. Kemmerer, Worshipful Master Prescott led the brethren in repeating the Master Mason obligation in unison. Mr. Durell Carothers of Allright Parking lent the lot across Clay Avenue free of charge for the occasion.

The lodge rented its lodge room to Bluebell Chapter No. 856, Order of the Eastern Star, and Bluebell Assembly No. 261, Order of Rainbow Girls, arranged to report its applicants to the lodges sharing its jurisdiction, and authorized the Gray-Temple Masonic Corporation to negotiate the sale or lease of the building at 1407 Fannin Street.

Brother Prescott was a member of Will N. Kidd Chapter No. 424, Royal Arch Masons, San Jacinto Council No. 347, Royal and Select Masters, and Ruthven Commandery No. 2, where he was created a Knight Templar on July 25, 1958. He was also a member of Arabia Temple and of Blue Bell Chapter No. 856, Order of the Eastern Star.
