Gordon C. Evans

Gordon C. Evans was born at Groveton, Texas, on April 10, 1905. He received his degrees in Gray Lodge in 1926: the Entered Apprentice on July 9, the Fellowcraft on August 13, and the Master Mason degree on September 24. He was appointed Junior Steward in 1928 and advanced through the chairs to his installation as the 62nd Master in 1933, with Past Masters J. A. Hudson and K. E. Gaugler as installing officers.

His year opened with the adoption of revised by-laws and a visit from Grand Master Wallace Hughston. Brother Wm. H. Scott suggested a question box so members could raise matters of Masonic interest, the brethren watched the electric bill closely in hard times, and a coffee urn was acquired with saved coupons. The lodge continued its support of the Masonic Relief Board, and the Rainbow Girls exemplified their work for the brethren.

The high point came on Past Masters’ Night, May 30, 1934, when Deputy Grand Master John H. Crooker, a Past Master of Gray Lodge, attended with Past Grand Masters Washer, Jones and Brandt. Past Grand Master Washer spoke on Masonry and the history of Texas. Membership stood at 1,072 in 1934.

Brother Evans was exalted in Washington Chapter No. 2, Royal Arch Masons, on January 24, 1927, and was also a member of Houston Council No. 1, Royal and Select Masters.
