Hughy Arlyn Johnson

Hughy Arlyn Johnson was born in Corsicana, Texas, on October 11, 1898. He earned his B.S. and M.A. degrees through Southwest Texas, the University of Texas and Peabody College, and spent 45 years in education as a teacher, principal and superintendent in Texas and Colorado. He was a Second Lieutenant in World War I and a Major in World War II, receiving the Bronze Star. He served 20 years on the Chamber of Commerce athletic committee, worked with the Boy Scouts, and was a member of Riverside Methodist Church. He married Laurie Dell Eslinger in 1940, and they had two children.

He received his degrees in Gray Lodge in 1924: the Entered Apprentice on April 4, the Fellowcraft on May 12, and the Master Mason degree on September 20. Appointed Junior Steward in 1930, he was installed as the 65th Master in 1936, the Texas Centennial year, by Past Master J. R. Atkinson, assisted by Past Master K. E. Gaugler. He presided with a gavel made from the wood of the Masonic Oak.

During his year Howard Musslewhite, a graduate of the Masonic Home, spoke to the lodge. The lodge concluded its care for the widow of a departed brother, sent a quilt to the Masonic Home, and gave to relief for victims of the Ohio and Mississippi River floods. The brethren honored Past Master S. R. Henderson on the 25th anniversary of his service as Master, and H. A. Halverston for 43 years of membership.

Brother Johnson received the 33° in 1938, presided over all four Houston Scottish Rite bodies, and served 30 years as a trustee. He was Past Potentate of Arabia Temple and active in the Arabia Patrol and Drum Corps.
